Have you seen Dune (2021)?

Hi guys, have you seen the latest Denis Villeneuve movie, Dune? What did you think of it? It’s got a rating of 8.2 on IMDB which is super high (albeit most movies tend to be overrated when they come out).

I’ll start with some comments. First off I have not read the book or seen the 1984 movie. So the plot twist was a pleasant surprise. The Dune universe and all of its intricacies (the Bene Gesserit sisters, the Sardaukar army, the various houses and factions etc.) were fascinating to learn about. The costumes were great while the dragonfly aircrafts were awesome….I did not think character development were that good. Paul’s growth in a capable leader felt rushed. None of the other characters felt that deep to be sympathized with (even Paul’s father).

Of course, the greatest thing about this movie is the soundtrack! Good old Hans Zimmer loved Dune and when Denis invited him to score the film, he agreed immediately! Zimmer said that he and his team worked around the clock and around the globe (literally) to produce a soundtrack that, in his words, must sound out of this world [sic]. So you hear a lot of whispers, natural sounds and dissonance in his music.

I am a great fan of Hans Zimmer after first discovering his score of True Romance (1993). So I covered 3 songs from this OST on the piano. Furthermore, I recognized a similarity between Zimmer’s Dune score and Ennio Morricone’s score of the Spaghetti Western ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’, particularly the song ‘Man With a Harmonica’. So I mashed them up together! I hope you like it!

Learn 7 languages with Lukas Graham's 7 Years Karaoke Version

Hello fellow language learners!

As you know when learning languages your teacher may ask you to listen to a song in that language. It’s a very fun way to learn commonly used words and and grammatical structures without boring yourself easily.

Today I want to share the karaoke version of the song ‘7 Years’ by Lukas Graham. It is a song about family, parents and life. The song has lyrics subtitled in 7 languages, some of which written by myself. You can use this song to learn French, Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, or Vietnamese. By the way translating lyrics is among one of the hardest translation jobs because you must not only convey the original meaning, but also make sure the output has the right rhythm, rhyme and in some languages intonation.

Here are some of the lyrics for your perusal:

English
Once I was seven years old, my mama told me.
Go make yourself some friends or you’ll be lonely.
Once I was seven years old
It was a big big world but we thought we were bigger
Pu-shing each other to the limits we were learning quicker
By 11 smoking herb and drinking burning liquor
Never rich so we were out to make that steady figure

Spanish
A los siete años mi madre me dijo
Has amigos no te quedes solo
Minha mãe me disse assim: Vá faça amigos ou vai ficar sozinho

Portuguese
Quando eu tinha 7 anos
Minha mãe me disse assim: Vá faça amigos ou vai ficar sozinho

Fumavamo erba, bevevamo fino a tardi
Anche se non ricchi sembravamo proprio duri

You can sing along to the full lyrics in the video above. Remember to turn on subtitles and fast forward to the right chapter for the language you want.

Music from Squid Game Soundtrack

Hi guys, it's me Jubinell again after a long hiatus, 11 years to be exact! Recently, I have decided to get serious with piano again. I purchased a new stage keyboard and started covering American and Asian pop songs and movie soundtracks.

Today I want to share with you guys the latest song I just played. It is 'I Remember My Name' from Episode 6 of the Netflix TV series "I Remember My Name".

5-Minute Performance Version:

1-Hour Relaxation Version:

[Spoiler Alert! Stop reading if you haven't watched the TV series.]

Squid Game (Korean: 오징어 게임; RR: Ojing-eo Geim) is a South Korean survival drama television series streaming on Netflix. It was written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, and stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, O Yeong-su, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-yeon, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung. The series was released worldwide on September 17, 2021, and distributed by Netflix. The show received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and within a week was one of Netflix's most watched programs in several regional markets.

Jung Jae-il (Korean: 정재일; born 7 May 1982) is a South Korean music composer. He notably composed the score of Award-winning movies Okja and Parasite, both directed by Bong Joon-ho. He also composed the OST for Squid Game, which was released on September 17, 2021. The soundtrack has 20 tracks, and the song 'I Remember My Name' is track number 6. This song was played during the ending scene of Episode 6, where the characters had to play a marble game against their own partner. The loser would be shot dead. Multiple protagonists such Seong Gi-hun (player number 456) and Cho Sang-woo (218) had to use dirty tactics to cheat their partners Oh Il-nam (001) and Abdul Ali (199). The most touching moment took place at the end of the scene, when the old man Oh Il-nam finally remembered his name. He then willingly gave Seong Gi-hun his remaining marble so that Seong Gi-hun could survive.

The song captured the ironic eventuality of the scene perfectly. It was as if the viewers were slowly dragged into the scene against their will. We are forced to accept the cruel fates and the horrible actions of the players. The song climaxes as the losers met their death. Then the heavy sound subdued as survivors moved on crying in tears.

I arranged the sheet music for piano with string orchestra in Musescore. You can check the link below. I filmed this video using an overhead camera, so please play along with me.

Multiple subtitles with KMPlayer

How to watch movies with multiple subtitles loaded simultaneously using KMPLayer

Hi,
In this post I'd like to introduce the KMPlayer and show you how to watch a movie with multiple subtitles displayed simultaneously.
What is KMPlayer? It's a Korean media player that supports many video/audio formats and offers a wide variety of video/audio/subtitle enhancement capabilities with full multi-language support. You can read more about it on Wikipedia and download it from the developer's homepage:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-Multimedia_Player
http://download.pandora.tv/?mode=kmp&tab=1

Since KMPlayer offers an interface in multiple languages, you'd want to set it to English to follow along with my post. Start the player, right-click anywhere on the screen, choose Options and make sure Advanced Menu is checked. Next, right-click the screen again and choose Languages - English.ini.

Now...on to the multisubtitles. Let's assume that you have a movie and some subtitles downloaded from the Internet. It is best to place the subtitles in the same folder as and name them the same as the movie file (with different name endings to indicate language: .ENG, .FRN, .JPN, etc.). If you do this KMPlayer will automatically load your subtitles into memory as soon as you open the movie file.

It's time to start the show. Open up the movie file with KMPlayer. Right-click the screen, choose Subtitles - Subtitle Languages. If you have named the files the same, the subtitles would show up automatically here. If not you can manually load the first subtitle by choosing Load Subtitle or by hitting Alt+O. In the same context menu, click on 2nd Subtitle and 3rd Subtitle to load your additional subtitles.

The subtitles should show up on your video screen immediately. However, they are probably in very inconvenient locations and sizes.

In order to manually adjust the location and size of your subtitles., hit F2 to access the Preferences menu. Choose Font Style under Subtitle Processing. Cycle through the 1st - 2nd - 3rd Subtitle tabs at the top and uncheck the "Inherit the attribute of the first subtitle" option. Then under Font size, enter your desired value (larger value means smaller size, as I believe C/L stands for character per line).

Now, go under Alignment and pay attention to the Subtitles Alignment/Margin section. For each of your subtitles, select where you want the subtitle to show up by clicking on 1 of the 9 radio buttons here (for example, clicking on the top-left button means that your subtitle will be displayed on the top-left area of the screen). Next, make sure the Top/Bottom % value is 0 so that your subtitle stays as close to the edge of the screen as possible. Finally, if you're placing one subtitle on top of another on the same area of the screen, be sure to increase the Top/Bottom pixels value of the subtitle you're placing on top so that it doesn't overlap with the bottom one (you can check by looking at the video screen after each adjustment since the changes are applied instantly).

With some trial and error, hopefully you will have all of the subtitles displayed correctly. Simply sit back, enjoy the movie and the language learning experience.

Some final remarks:
*KMPlayer is very much one of my favorite players for playing movies alongside GOM Player, another Korean product, and VLC Player (made by students of the École Centrale Paris). These three players are light, fast, support many formats, offer very easy shortcut keys and are {somewhat} open-sourced. All three are highly recommended (although only KMPlayer is capable of multisubtitling).
*KMPlayer currently only allows 3 subtitles to load at a time. Hopefully they will increase this limit in the future.
*KMPlayer also allows your subtitles to be displayed vertically, which is very convenient for East Asian subtitles. To access this feature simply check the box "Display subtitle vertically (as if in the Theater)" under Preferences - Subtitle Processing - Alignment. Then tweak with the font size and placement settings until you get the desired result.
